The last decade has seen substantial changes to the working environment within which the desk forms an integral part. Economic conditions and increased competition have lead to reduced budgets. Offices have become open plan, with a small amount of cellular rooms set aside for meetings, quiet work and directors. Discrimination Legislation, Ergonomic Standards and Health and Safety requirements have resulted in additional expectations of the workstation, including height adjustability. The arrival of the flat screen and space-efficient linear planning has lead to the virtual disappearance of both core desks and the return work-surface in favour of straight and wave workstations. Advances in technology have lead to the requirement for improved and more adaptable cable management. Aesthetics have become cleaner, less fussy and linear.
